EAST CENTER TENNIS COURTS UPDATE

GVR has notified us that the East Center fence on the north end of the tennis courts was blown down by the wind.

The contractor has informed GVR that it might be a while before they can come down to repair the fence.

GVR will put up a “construction fence” on the north end of the court that will allow the courts to remain operational until a permanent fence can be installed. There will be no wind screens on the temporary fence.

Summer Women’s Luncheon

Fun was had by all and great food was shared along with our stories of days of glory. About 25 brave ladies sat in the heat under the new ramada and ate salads along with yummy deserts. Wish more could have attended.

Summer Tennis Leagues/Drop In Tennis

These are not drop in leagues - please read what to do to play:

Women’s Tennis will start at Desert Hills Courts at 7:15 a.m. begining Tuesday, May 6th. Contact Nancy Ziegler at 203-8981, or ngziegler@cox.net. Please do not show up at the courts, you will need to call Nancy with your Name, Phone, E-mail address and GVR number.

Men and women’s tennis will start at Desert Hills Courts at 9:00 a.m. beginning on Friday, May 2nd and will run through September 26th. Contact Jon Otto at 207-6456 or jon.otto@cox.net to sign up.

Drop In Tennis::::

Tuesday and Thursday evenings, 5:30 p.m. at west there is a mixer for men and women. This is a drop in group. The coordinator is Kim Steinhilb. You can reach him at 393-1494. You do not need to call first, just come and play.

Meet at West at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 28th. Names will be drawn for team placement and play will begin at noon.

Play will be on Fridays, 12 noon to 2 p.m. at west center beginning 3/28 and ending 4/25.

Levels of play are 3.0 and up.

WE HAD A GREAT TOURNAMENT - GOOD FOOD - LOTS OF FUN FOR PLAYERS AND WATCHERS! THANKS TO ALL WHO PLAYED, THANKS TO ALL WHO WORKED TO PROVIDE THE FOOD, THE TENNIS AND FUN!

So we missed October - call it Nktoberfest then. When? Sunday, November 4, 2007. Where? West Center. Cost? $5 for tennis club members $10 for non members. Limited to the first 48 who sign up. Where do I sign up? West center at the Reservations area. Fill in the entry form and put your name on the list, leave the registration form and your money.

Some will play at 10:00 and some at 11:30. There will be beer and brats along with other good food. Carl will be cooking!

BE SURE TO PUT YOUR NAME ON THE LIST ALONG WITH COMPLETING THE ENTRY FORM!

TENNIS CLINICS

Carl will be starting the clinics on Monday, October 15th. They will be every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 2 P.M. - 4 P.M. at Desert Hills tennis courts.

This is a drop in activity to practice strokes, drill and play practice games. The clinics are open to both men and women of all abilities.

There is no fee.

Sign-up for fall leagues will be Friday, October 5, 2007 at Desert Hills at noon and play will commence Tuesday October 9, 2007.

The Winter 2008 Sign-up will also be at Desert Hills at noon, January 4 and play will begin on Tuesday, January 8, 2008.

Men’s play will be as follows:
Tuesday 12:00-2:00 p.m. at Desert Hills captain to be announced.
Wednesdays and Thursdays will be between 12:00-2:00 p.m. at West Tennis Center. Captain for Wednesdays will be Jerry Rambo until Hugh Bennet’s arrival. Jim Donahue will captain Thursdays.
Friday will be at Desert Hills from 12:00-2:00 p.m. and the captain will be Norm Garneau.

Women’s play will be:

OCTOBER USTA PLAY

There will be a USTA Senior Mixed Doubles league this fall, along with the regular USTA men’s and women’s Super Senior Early Start Leagues. Both leagues will be combined ratings this year. Which means 6.0, 7.0, 8.0, etc. You can have only 1 level between players. So for example, a 6.0 team could have two 3.0 players or a 2.5 and a 3.5 player; a 7.0 team could have two 3.5 players or a 3.0 and a 4.0. Last year the levels were different for Super Senior. The Roadrunners, Carolyn Herron’s women’s 3.0 senior USTA, team just finished first at Sectionals. They won 4 matches out of 4 so will be heading to Indian Wells October 26th through the 28th.
