After falling 2-1 to the Phoenix-area team in the first round, the GV team survived a wet Saturday and closed strong on Sunday with a second place finish.
Wayne Kerr and Ray Wardlaw provided the only victory on Friday coming up with an impressive showing against a duo from the eventual championship team from the Central Arizona district, winning 6-3, 6-4. Wayne and Ray went undefeated for the weekend.
All three of the matches against Northern New Mexico (Albuquerque) were suspended by rain soon after the start of Saturday’s action at the El Paso Tennis and Swim Club. Play was moved to the Tennis West facility where it had been fairly dry most of the morning. Wayne and Ray finished their first set but were again suspended by rain. The teams of Don Herron/Tee Sula and Jim Swifka/Marv Weber were not able to continue their matches against Albuquerque on Saturday due to the weather.
Amazingly, the rain stopped by Sunday morning and Wayne and Ray quickly completed their 6-2, 6-3 victory. The other win was a 6-4, 4-6, 10-8 victory by Don and Tee. Jim and Marv dropped a close three-setter 7-5, 3-6, 8-10.
Due to time-constraints the final match against the Northern Arizona district champions (Prescott), pro-set scoring was used. Green Valley needed this win to secure second place honors and ‘Finalist’ trophies. Wayne and Ray won 9-7, Marv and Tee won 8-3 and Butch Frith and Don won 9-7.
The GV team was surprised by the appearance of former Green Valley residents Jim and Diane Grieg who flew in from California for the weekend to support the team.
This completes the successful 2015 8.0 55+ season that began in January.
