The Tennis Club is starting a program called QuickStart tennis. What is it? It’s a program developed by USTA for younger children (10 and under) “to learn, rally and play tennis quickly and in a way that is both enjoyable and rewarding.” It is a program that gets kids involved in tennis immediately within the first hour of stepping onto the court. The court is smaller, balls are soft and larger and rackets are smaller (although, as adults we will use regular size rackets). We believe that we can use the outline of the program to help folks in Green Valley who may want to get started in tennis (ok, we can call it LateStart tennis) who may think it’s too late to take up the game or don’t know how to get involved. We will use softer balls to start and play will be on a much smaller court. After the QuickStart program, the player could move into other programs we offer in Green Valley.
The Tennis Club, with the work from Jon Otto, submitted a proposal to USTA for a grant for supplies, balls and training. They turned us down but the Southern Section of USTA gave us a grant for balls and supplies to see if the QuickStart program could be useful for adults. After the pilot program, we feel that we can use QuickStart to teach fundamentals of tennis to players wanting to improve their strokes.
QuickStart will begin on Friday, November 19 at Canoa Hills tennis courts starting at noon. The session will last approximately one and one-half hour. Ideally, the beginning program will last 5 weeks at which time the participants should be able to move onto other tennis in Green Valley; however, it is possible that some the participants will want to continue with the softer balls and smaller court longer than the beginning 5 weeks. Our adviser for the program will be our teaching pro (Ray), although he won’t be able to attend the sessions. The beginning instructors will be Carl Johnson and Jon Otto although we will be training other instructors along the way.
The cost of the program is $10 which pays dues to the Tennis Club. We have a few extra rackets.
