Leagues

Tennis Club Leagues have finished for this year. Watch for new leagues in November. Drop In tennis at East Center is starting earlier now that the summer is fast approaching. All GVR members are welcome to drop in and play. East drop in is Monday through Saturday starting at sun-up until noon (or until the heat chases you off the courts). Come join the fun.

COURT CLOSURES

Desert Hills courts 1-4 and West Center courts 5 & 6 will be closed for reconstruction from Mid-April through June, 2010. New post-tension concrete courts will be constructed by GVR. Please be patient until these 6 courts are reopened.

ROAD CLEAN UP

The spring pick-up operation for the tennis club will be on Sunday, April 18.

If you’re interested in this worthwhile and fun “treasure hunt”, please join us at the West center tennis ramada at 7:45 AM, dressed for the desert (long pants and sleeves, sturdy boots or shoes, gloves, hat, sunscreen and water.)

We have new rules from ADOT, and we won’t go to the site until everyone has read and signed up. (They’re not onerous, just new.) We supply orange vests and pick-up sticks (custom made by Grant).

We should be finished by 10:30 or so, and some of us will then stop at Desert Diamond for brunch – “dutch treat’.

January potluck will be Sunday, January 10, 2010 at Desert Hills. Social Hour starts at 5:30 p.m. with dinner folloiwng at 6:15 p.m. Bring your cash and purchase a split the pot ticket from John Hadley. Bring a dish to serve 8, your place settings and any drinks you might like to have. Entertainment this month will be Ed Osnowitz and John Brennan. They are USTA certified referees and will share their experiences with those attending.

Highway Clean Up

It is that time of the year. Help clean up I19!

When: Sunday, November 8, 2009
Time: Meet at west center at 7:45 if you are new, 8:00 if you have done this before

The Green Valley Tennis Club was assigned the piece of I-19 from Pima Mine Road, north one mile. We are restricted by ADOT to only pick up on weekends. Pick ups are made twice a year.

Wear long sleeved shirts, long pants, gloves, hiking shoes and a hat. The tennis club will provide vests and pickup sticks (courtesy of Grant Alley).

We had about 16 hardy souls June 14th. It generally takes about 3 hours.

TOURNAMENT INFORMATION:

The first 24 women and the first 24 men to sign up, will be scheduled to play in the matches. The tournament directors will assign the team members.

Please arrive 10 minutes before your match time.

Balls will be provided, please return to Verne Phillips after you play, they will be used again by the clinics.

Warm up for 5 minutes.
Play for 45 minutes. Men switch partners for second 45 minutes.
Keep track of total # of games won. Fantastic Prizes will be given to winners. In the event of ties – a coin flip will determine winner.

Food will be provided after you play. Includes place settings and drinks. Beer will be available.

NATIONAL CHAMPION LIVING IN G.V.

A long time Tennis Club member, Tudor Apmadoc, has been playing in National tournaments throughout the United States. Tudor has been ranked number 1 in men’s over 90 singles and doubles. He has been playing on all surfaces – hard court, indoor court, grass court nationals and is heading to the clay court nationals at Pinehurst, NC starting September 27th. GO GET EM TUDOR!

I19 CLEANUP

There were 16 people out cleaning up I19 on Sunday, June 14th. A rattlesnake tried to help some of the workers, but was politely asked to leave. A second group of three men went out on Wednesday morning to finish off the clean up. The next clean up will be in the fall. Thank you volunteers!

Tennis reservations will be taken MONDAY, WEDNESDAY, FRIDAY,
during the summer. The Tennis Hut will be open between 12:15 and
1:00 for telephone (beginning at 12:35) or walk-in (lottery system)
reservations ONLY on those days. All else will remain as usual (such as individual name and GVR number can appear one time in a 7-day
period, reservations for prior days will be taken between 12:15 and
12:30.)

April Fools Play Tournament

What an April Fools! Here we are in April with March winds. But inspite of 50 mile an hour gusts the game went on on Friday. Saturday’s weather was much calmer and the BBQ was great.

The Javalenas won by 10 games. Close match and lots of fun was had by all.

Schedule of Play

Women’s Doubles both days begin at noon. Men’s Doubles both days begin at 2 p.m. Players will play both days. Bring a can of ball.s.

Mixed doubles will begin at 4 p.m. – players will play either Friday or Saturday so check the schedule. Bring a can of balls.

Team scores will be recorded and announced at the BBQ on Saturday. BYOB to the Fools Party, all else will be provided. Party will begin after the Mixed doubles play between 5:30 and 6 p.m. and will be at the Ramada at the West Center.
